Kaplan’s “First Year Teacher” Contest
In celebration of Digital Learning Day, Kaplan is pleased to announce an opportunity for educators to submit ideas and best practices on incorporating digital and blended learning in the classroom. Selected submissions will be published in the revised edition of Kaplan's top-selling book, "First Year Teacher." Selections will be made by a team of Kaplan curriculum experts and included in a new chapter of "First Year Teacher" focused on practical and effective ways to incorporate digital learning in the classroom. The top three winners will receive a $50 gift card.
The new eBook edition of “First Year Teacher,” including the new chapter will be released during Teacher Appreciation Week in May.
The due date for submissions is midnight Eastern Time, February 29, 2012. Please send all submissions using this form.

NASA African-American History Month and Engineers Week
In recognition of African-American History Month and Engineers Week in February, the Office of Education at Goddard Space Flight Center will host a live webcast for teachers and students in grades K-12! On February 22nd from 1-2PM Eastern, students will able to interact live with African-American engineers and scientists who will share how they use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in their careers, what sparked their career choices, and how students can prepare for future careers in STEM fields. The event will be streamed on the Digital Learning Network "DLiNfo" webcast channel, and during the event students will be able to submit questions for the scientists to answer via an email address that will be provided by the on-air host. On February 1, 2012, thirty-nine states, hundreds of school districts, more than 18,000 teachers, and nearly 2 million students participated in Digital Learning Day.
National Town Hall: As the marquee event of Digital Learning Day, the National Town Hall featured a roundtable discussion with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski. It also included live interaction via Skype with four school districts in Charlotte, Cleveland, Denver, and Houston; profiled great teachers who are effectively using technology to deliver instruction; and focused on successful education innovation projects that demonstrate how technology can be used in the classroom to improve student outcomes.
Morning Webcast: An extensive, in-depth webcast demonstrating how digital learning is already being used in classrooms around the country. During the webcast, educators shared innovative approaches designed to ensure that students graduate from high school prepared for college and a career. State Events: Thirty-nine states hosted Digital Learning Day events. Eighteen states issued proclamations announcing Digital Learning Day.
